Hurricane Risk Communication: Are We Burying the Lead?

Jamie will highlight, compare, and offer lessons learned from two recent high-impact storms, Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Idalia, along with a recap of the 2023 hurricane season. His novel presentation style and unique perspectives on hurricane risk communication will challenge participants to approach high-impact weather disasters in a new way.

About Jamie Rhome

Jamie Rhome is the Deputy Director of NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami. He helps to develop NHC’s long term strategies, and to define and coordinate much of the organization’s annual planning and day-to-day execution of work and budget. Mr. Rhome received both his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science. For his pioneering work in developing new storm surge forecast and warning systems, Rhome received the 2016 National Weather Service Isaac Cline award, the 2017 Department of Commerce (DOC) Gold Medal, the 2019 NOAA Administrator’s Award, the prestigious 2019 Service to America medal (“Sammie”), and the 2021 National Weather Service Regional Cline Award.
